Moving house? Here are a few simple tips to enable a smooth transition

Moving house can be one of the most stressful life events you’ll ever experience, but it doesn’t come without its rewards! Sure, there’s a lot to think about and your to-do list might exceed a few pages, but once you’re settled in your new home with a new future to look forward to, it’ll all be worth it.

In the UK, each year, approximately 4-5% of the population will move to a different city or county in the UK. Reasons why people choose to move home vary, with the leading reasons being:

  • In need of more space
  • To be closer to family
  • Change of scenery
  • New job

Whatever your own reason, we’ve put together a few simple tips to enable a smooth transition when moving house.

Have a good clear out

Before you even begin to pack, it’s important you take a good look around your house and throw away (or donate, if appropriate) anything that no longer serves your life any purpose. A new house typically means a fresh start, so don’t feel inclined to pack old photo frames and tattered books if you have no intention of keep them somewhat on show in the new house.

Start with the rooms you use the least

When it comes to packing up your belongings, it makes sense to start with the rooms that you use the least to ensure you don’t accidentally pack an essential everyday item that you’ll need prior to the move. The spare bedroom and loft are usually the best places to start.

Make sure you double check you have everything before you leave

This might sound like an obvious tip, but you’d be surprised by how many people have left behind a valuable item because they didn’t thoroughly check every part of the house before giving up their keys. Check (and then check again!) areas you might have forgotten about, like the loft or the garage.

Use the help of a removal company

You don’t have to do everything by yourself. Once all your boxes are packed and you’re ready to move from your old house to the new house, use a removal company to do all of the heavy lifting for you! There are so many different ways that a professional removal company can help you make a trying day easier, so, it’s worth giving a company a chance so that you can focus on other areas of the move.

Have a strong idea of what you want the interiors of your new house to look like
